Microsoft’s ChatGPT-powered new Bing has caused quite a stir in recent weeks, after reports of its ‘unhinged’ conversations with users surfaced. Many users shared their bizarre conversations with the AI on Twitter, leaving Microsoft to admit that they were unprepared for how people were using their chatbot.

In response to this, Microsoft has committed to daily improvements and on last Friday, the company announced that they would be limiting conversations on Bing to 5 questions per session and 50 questions per day. To further avoid confusion, the chatbot has also now the option to clear the context after each chat session, which users can do with the broom icon located beside the search box.

Microsoft previously detailed what they learned from their first week of implementing the AI-powered Bing, in which, under the chat category they said “Bing can become repetitive or be prompted/provoked to give responses that are not necessarily helpful or in line with our designed tone.” And hence, new restrictions on chats or conversations have been implemented to solve these issues.

ChatGPT is a natural language understanding model that uses transfer learning to understand and respond to user conversations. Its recent success with Bing proves that it is a major step forward in artificial intelligence, but it’s clear that the technology is still far from perfect. As Microsoft continues to make improvements to the technology, the hope is that it will be able to have more accurate conversations with users and understand the context of their conversations better.

The controversy surrounding ChatGPT and Bing has highlighted the importance of responsibly developing artificial intelligence in order to ensure that it does not lead to unexpected results.

Although there have been issues, the technology has the potential to be incredibly beneficial if used correctly. Microsoft has taken the necessary steps to ensure that the conversations remain appropriate and that the data is secure, which is a great step forward for the industry.
