OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence research lab, has released its latest language model, GPT-4. This model is more creative and collaborative than ever before and is capable of solving difficult problems with greater accuracy than its predecessor, GPT-3.5.

With the release of GPT-4, OpenAI aims to revolutionize the field of natural language processing and take it to new heights. In this article, we will take a deep dive into everything you need to know about GPT-4.

What is GPT-4?

GPT-4 stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4, which is a type of language model that uses deep learning techniques to analyze and generate human-like text. It is the successor to the highly successful GPT-3.5, which was released in 2020. GPT-4 is designed to be a larger, more powerful model than its predecessor, capable of parsing both text and image input, although it can only respond via text.

According to OpenAI, GPT-4 is a large multimodal model that can accept image and text inputs and emit text outputs. It exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, although it is still less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios.

Capabilities of GPT-4

GPT-4 boasts several impressive capabilities that make it stand out from its predecessors. One of the most notable is its ability to parse both text and image input. This means that it can analyze and interpret more complex input, making it ideal for use in applications such as image captioning and visual question answering.

The model understands images so well that it can express logical ideas about them. For example, it is capable of knowing that if we were to cut the strings in the image below, the balloons would fly away.

It can provide recipe suggestions from photos of ingredients, write captions and descriptions, and process up to 25,000 words, about eight times as many as ChatGPT.

GPT-4 also exhibits improved accuracy and precision in various benchmarks such as the Uniform Bar Exam, LSAT, SAT Math, and SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing exams. It scored 88th percentile or higher on these exams, indicating that it is capable of solving difficult problems with a high degree of accuracy.

According to OpenAI, GPT-4 is not easily distinguishable from its predecessor GPT-3.5 in everyday conversations. However, the company claims that GPT-4’s enhancements are apparent in its performance on various tests and benchmarks. In the words of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, “GPT-4 is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.”

Applications of GPT-4

OpenAI has already partnered with several companies to integrate GPT-4 into their products, including Duolingo, Stripe, Be My Eyes, Morgan Stanley and Khan Academy. These partnerships demonstrate the model’s wide range of potential applications, from language learning to financial services.

GPT-4 is also being used to power Microsoft’s Bing Chatbot.

Is GPT-4 Available?

Open AI’s paying customers, ChatGPT Plus users, can access GPT-4. The cost of ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month. It is currently capped at 100 messages every 4 hours.

Developers can join the waitlist to get GPT-4 API access. The API access will cost $0.03 per 1000 prompt request tokens and $0.06 per 1000 completion response tokens.

The default rate limits for GPT-4 API are:

  • 40K tokens per minute
  • 200 requests per minute

Limitations of GPT-4

Despite its impressive capabilities, GPT-4 still retains some of the same limitations as its predecessors. OpenAI has warned that the model may “hallucinate,” a phenomenon where AI invents facts or makes reasoning errors. This is a common problem with language models, and GPT-4 is no exception. While it can generate highly plausible responses, there is always a risk that the information it provides is inaccurate or misleading.

Another limitation of GPT-4 is its lack of knowledge about events that have occurred after September 2021. This is because the model was trained on a dataset that only goes up until that point. As a result, it may struggle to generate responses that are relevant to current events or trends.

As Altman puts it, “The difference between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 is not that you can hold a conversation with one but not the other; it’s that GPT-4 works a little better on a variety of specific tasks.”

Concerns around GPT-4

Despite the many benefits that GPT-4 offers, there are concerns that it could one day take over many jobs currently done by humans. OpenAI has acknowledged these concerns and are working to prevent any negative impacts by GPT-4.

“The power of the algorithm will increase, but it’s not a second revolution,” said Robert Vesoul, CEO of Illuin Technology, a French AI start-up.

Vesoul questioned the safety precautions implemented by OpenAI, which has already come under fire from billionaire Elon Musk for allegedly excessively censoring speech on their AI in an effort to avoid further embarrassing reactions.

“I am not sure if I want an AI to block responses on unknown topics… Should an AI decide if I smoke or not?” Vesoul told AFP.

“We spent six months making GPT-4 safer and more aligned. GPT-4 is 82 percent less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40 percent more likely to produce factual responses,” OpenAI said.

Conclusion

The release of GPT-4 is a significant milestone in the field of natural language processing. With its ability to parse both text and image inputs and emit text outputs, GPT-4 can revolutionize the way we interact with machines and each other.

It still lacks the ability to understand context and may “hallucinate” information.

Nonetheless, GPT-4 has enormous potential in various fields, from education to healthcare to finance, to development and entertainment.
