Just 2 days before Google’s “Live in Paris”, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, unveils Bard in an apparent attempt to outcompete its rival ChatGPT.
Since it’s launch in November 2022, Microsoft-owned ChatGPT has taken the tech world by storm. It’s potential to generate detailed answers on any topic, write essays and poems and even code has amazed users across the globe. In just 2 months, they’ve acquired 100 million users posing a threat to Google’s Search Engine.
Google, in fact, issued a Code Red within it’s organization and employees were asked to switch gears and start working on Artificial Intelligence and they did, resulting in the invention of Bard, Google’s very own A.I. Chatbot.
So, what exactly is Bard and how does it work?
Bard is an AI powered Chatbot that offers answers to queries in a conversational way similar to Chat GPT. Bard uses Google’s very own Language Model for Dialogue Applications (or LaMDA). LaMDA has been trained in Dialogue for the last 2 years.
Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.

How to Access Google Bard?
Currently, Bard is only available to trusted testers, as per Google. However, they plan to launch it for public access within a few weeks and also take external feedback into consideration to make sure Bard creates safe and highly innovative outputs.
Is Bard better than ChatGPT? (Bard vs ChatGPT)
It’s a tough fight and both seem to have their pros and cons.
As mentioned above, Pichai said that Bard draws information from the internet to provide the latest and high-quality responses, whereas ChatGPT relies on data till the year 2021. This gives an edge to Bard.
Both Bard and ChatGPT have plans to integrate their language models into their search engines.
But, here’s where it gets interesting.
Microsoft’s search engine, Bing gets around 8% of the overall internet search activity and Google’s search dominates with 85%. However, Google heavily relies on advertising for its revenue and ChatGPT poses a threat to Google’s advertising revenue. Microsoft has been doing fine without a ton of advertising revenue. So integrating ChatGPT to Bing is an added advantage for Microsoft whereas, for Google, integration with Bard could mean taking a hit on their advertising revenue.
More than 100 million users are already using ChatGPT daily and are now addicted to having it as a personal assistant while Bard will still take a few weeks before it launches to the public.
In conclusion, ChatGPT appears to be ahead of the game as compared to Bard but Google is not the one to back down either and is skilled at what they do.
2023 will definitely be the defining year for innovations in AI.
